THE SMALLS: FOREVER IS A LONG TIME

Edmonton band The Smalls was a huge influence on the underground music scene in Western Canada in the 90s. After breaking up in ’99 and living separate lives for over a decade, the band decided to do one reunion tour, documented by filmmakers John Kerr and Trevor Smith. John and Trevor approached Studio Dialog to help create a title sequence for the documentary to match the raw energy of the band’s music and help promote it.

Inspiration for the titles came directly from the band’s old gig posters and album covers and the aesthetic of punk design in general – the destruction of existing materials to be re-purposed into crude hand-made promotional materials.

Using almost entirely hand-done methods, the title sequence goes through this process of destroying pieces of old band materials, also symbolizing the band’s journey from its beginnings to its breakup and reunion.
